Daily Report

Nasty weather has kept several boats at the docks the past couple days- however today changed all of that, with several boaters heading out to see what they can find! We saw a variety of dolphin and yellowfin today, certainly a pretty sight after last weeks foul weather.

Both ‘The Zipper’ and the ‘Grande Pez’ fished the Washington today, finding some dolphin and a few yellowfin. “The Zipper’ caught one dolphin, and the ‘Grande Pez’ returned with 4 Yellowfin and 2 Dolphin. Just outside of the Washington was where the ‘Boss Hogg’ crew decided on, returning with 10 Dolphin and releasing a fairly large Bluefin.

The ‘Reel Chaos’ Crew fished the Lumps, returning with 4 Big Eye Tuna, 1 Yellowfin, and 2 Dolphin. The ‘Max Bet’ wasn’t far off with 6 Yellowfin and 1 Dolphin. The ‘Marli’ crew fished the ‘Rockpile’ today, bringing back 2 Big Eye and 7 Dolphin to the docks!

Today was all about the sharks! As the ‘Mako Mania’ came to a close, anglers trekked out in search of the ‘big one’ to wrap up Bahia’s fishing tournament. The ‘Jezebel’ caught a slew of fish, including 1 Mako, 1 Tiger shark release, and 1 Dusky Shark- from the 25 Fathom line. Fishing the Hot Dog was the ‘No Slack’ with 1 Mako, and the ‘C-Boys’ who released 2 Mako’s, 2 Blue Sharks, and 1 Sand Shark. Captain Mark Hoos on the ‘Marli’ fished the Massey Canyon, and released 7 Blue Sharks. The ‘No Quarter’ crew fished the Muff Diver Wrecks and brought 1 Mako back to the docks.

The Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament kicks off on June 11th and is sure to bring camaraderie and excitement to the docks – we are excited to see what the summer has in store!

Today we saw a much slower day at the docks- but we still saw a few fish brought back to the docks. The ‘Zipper’ crew brought back 2 Yellowfin Tuna and 1 Mahi from the PoorMans, and the ‘Boss Hogg’ fished 120 miles to return with 3 Yellowfin Tuna and 1 Dolphin. The ‘Blood Money’ decided to fish an overnighter tonight, and we are excited to see what that trip bring back to the docks.

Several fisherman are expected to fish tomorrow for the last day of Bahia Marina’s “Mako Mania”- stay tuned for more at-the-dock action!

Mako Mania kicked off today- and in turn kicked off the season for several boats out of Sunset Marina. Some searched for tuna, most searched for shark, but everyone was looking for Ocean City’s first White Marlin (Although no luck). We saw a wide array of fish at the docks today- the ‘Marli’ released 4 Blue Sharks and 2 Brown Sharks from the Washington, the ‘Boss Hogg’ traveled 120 miles to return with 6 Yellowfin and 2 Dolphin, and the ‘Dog House’ fished the Rockpile and returned with a variety of tilefish, sea bass, dolphin, and a mako!

Despite some cloudy weather in the forecast, the ‘Marli’ chose to fish the Hot Dog and reported a release of 6 Blue Sharks! Dreary weather throughout the week may keep some of the boats at the docks, but we are certain a few will trek out over the weekend in search of Ocean City’s first White Marlin.

Memorial Day showed promise for a great start to summer- with a few boats returning with Sharks. On Friday we saw a 230 lb Thresher from the C-Boys, and today brought us a 202 lb Mako from the crew of the “No Quarter”! Captain Kyle Peet also reported releasing 12 Blue sharks. The ‘Marli’ fished the Hot Dog to find 24 Blue Sharks and 1 Tiger shark, all of which they released.

Still no sign of Whitey as of today, which mean the first white marlin prize for Ocean City is still up for grabs! This year is even more special, since several businesses (Sunset Marina and Atlantic Tackle being two of those businesses) teamed up to provide the White Marlin prize money when the town planned to remove it from their funding. The town of Ocean City has since decided to keep the prize money, increasing the purse to roughly $15,000!

We had a great start to the holiday weekend here at Sunset!  The sun was shining and temperatures were perfect for the grand opening of the marina pools.  Today was also the first day of the Marlin Club’s Memorial Day Tournament with all 13 boats in the tournament out fishing.  Scales are still open right now so be sure to check in tomorrow for Day 1 results.  We had a few of our charter boats go out shark fishing today and they had a successful day.  The “C-boys” returned with a 230 lb thresher shark which they caught while fishing the Parking Lot.  The “Osprey”  went to the Hot dog today releasing 6 blue sharks and catching a 90 lb Mako shark.  If you haven’t done so yet be sure to call the marina office to book your next charter at 410-213-9600!

It was another beautiful day here at Sunset Marina.  Many of the boat crews were wondering about getting their boats ready for the season and sharing a few fishing tales while they were at it.  A true reminder that the season is upon us!  The “Marli” ventured out to the Norfolk again today and returned with 18 nice size dolphin.  If you haven’t made plans for tomorrow night yet be sure to stop by Sunset Grille for the annual Pirate Party on the docks 6-9pm.  Proceeds benefit  Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services.  Dress in your best Pirate garb and enjoy the food and live entertainment!!

Finally feeling like summer around here at Sunset Marina!  The palm trees arrived this week, the pools are being prepped and there were nice warm temperatures throughout the day.  The “Marli” went out fishing today and had a great day! They were fishing in the Norfolk and brought back 8 dolphin and 7 yellowfin tuna.  Many other boats arrived back at the marina today for the season which means more fishing reports are sure to follow!!  If you haven’t done so already be sure to call the Marina office at 410-213-9600 to book your next fishing charter!!

October fishing seems to be heating up as the “Marli” ventured down to the Rockpile and caught 18 yellowfin tuna!  Capt. Mark is going to try and get a couple more days in this month if the fishing stays good and he will be back at it on Saturday.  Atlantic Tackle will be open until 6pm Monday-Thursday and 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays if you need to get any tackle supplies or bait.    If you are looking to pack some meat in the freezer there is fish to be caught!

With Hurricane Matthew behind us, a lot of people are making their preparations to head down south for the winter months.  The boats that hauled out are getting little things taken care of before they splash and there has been a lot of boats topping off, waiting for that next weather window to open up.  Transients have started pulling in by the numbers from the upper New England area as we make the transition to the offseason.

This doesn’t mean some charter boats aren’t going to make the best out of some good weather and try to pack the freezer.  The “Boss Hogg” ventured down to the Washington Canyon and put 6 yellowfin and a nice wahoo in the box!  We forgot to mention yesterday (10/11) that the “Marli” went to the Poorman’s Canyon and put his charter on a yellowfin and 25 dolphin!  Hopefully we get a few more fishable days here in the next couple weeks and can end the season on a high note!

We wish there was a fishing report to put up but with the wake of Hurricane Matthew putting a damper on the weekend the fleet will have to wait it out for a couple days!  Luckily the storm looks like it is going to veer off to the east once it hits the Carolinas so for now it looks like we dodged a bullet.

There was a great wahoo bite before the weather got in the way along with mahi mahi floating around out in the canyons.  Yellowfin tunas were being caught here and there but we hope to see a more concentrated bite next week to cap off the 2016 season!  Hopefully the weather allows the fleet to head out early next week to scope out!
