2008 Offshore Powerboat Races - May 31st - June 1st
Sunset Marina was rumbling with the sounds of high powered engines while they hosted the very first race of the 2008 season for the Offshore Powerboat Association's "Miss Geico Triple Crown". This was the first of a three race competition followed by races in Patchogue, NY and Point Pleasant, NJ. We had a great turn out with 53 boats entered in 8 different classes. The marina saw a flood of activity with race teams getting ready and displaying their boats in the dry pits, as fans and spectators came to check out these amazing vessels that can achieve speeds exceeding 180 mph. Saturday's weather was windy and ended with a summer storm, but Sunday cleared up for a perfect day on the water. While some on-lookers chose to stick around the marina to watch the boats be craned off their trailers into the water, others chose to take their boats out for a view of the race from the water. And still more spectators could see all the action of the high-speed races just of the beaches of Ocean City between 4th and 40th streets. If you missed it this year you should definitely stay on the lookout for information about the 2009 race!
Stay tuned for video from the 2008 race!
